About the Markdown Format

This sample is a single GitHub-flavored Markdown (GFM) pipe table: a header row, a delimiter row, and 30 data rows, one per employee. Pipe tables are not part of original Markdown — they were popularized by GitHub and are now the de facto standard, supported by GFM, CommonMark extensions, Pandoc, and nearly every static-site generator.

The syntax packs several conventions into two lines:

  • The delimiter row defines alignment. :--- is left-aligned, ---: right-aligned. This file right-aligns salary (---:) and left-aligns the text columns (:---), so a renderer’s alignment handling is immediately visible.
  • Column-width padding is cosmetic. The writer (pandas to_markdown, backed by tabulate) pads cells so pipes line up in raw text. Renderers ignore the padding — stripping it changes nothing — which makes this file a good fixture for verifying that a parser normalizes whitespace correctly.
  • Escaping is minimal but real. A literal | inside a cell must be written \|. No value in this sample needs it, keeping the file parseable by naive split('|') code as well as real parsers.

Markdown tables are a presentation format, not a data format: no types, no quoting spec, and awkward diffs once padding shifts. The pragmatic workflow is to keep data in CSV and render to Markdown at the last step — CSV to Markdown does exactly that, and Markdown to CSV recovers the data when someone inevitably ships you a table in a readme.

This file is one of eleven formats in this section that all carry the same 30 employee rows; converting it back to CSV should reproduce the CSV sample exactly, padding aside.

FAQ

4 questions
Does downloading this file send any data to a server?
No. The sample is a static file served directly by the site — nothing is uploaded, processed, or inspected. The Markdown and CSV tools linked below run entirely in your browser too.
Will this table render on GitHub?
Yes. It uses GitHub-flavored Markdown pipe-table syntax — a header row, a delimiter row, and one pipe-separated line per record — which renders in GitHub readmes, issues, and pull requests, and in most documentation generators.
Why are the cells padded with so many spaces?
The file was written by pandas' to_markdown (via the tabulate library), which pads every column to a fixed width so the raw text lines up in a monospace editor. Renderers collapse the padding, so the aligned and unaligned forms produce identical HTML — a useful property to verify in a Markdown parser.
Is the employee data real?
No. All 30 records are fictional, and every email address uses the reserved example.com domain, so the file is safe for demos, tests, and documentation.
