About the CSV Format
This page is a reference for the CSV format itself, anchored by a small, well-formed example file. CSV is defined (loosely) by RFC 4180: records are lines, fields are separated by commas, and the first line is conventionally a header naming each column.
The sample demonstrates the format’s happy path:
- Header row. Line one declares the seven field names; every following line is one record with exactly seven fields.
- Comma delimiter. Fields are split on
,. Because no value in this file contains a comma, no field needs quoting — every byte you see is data. - Quoting and escaping. When a field does contain a comma, double quote, or newline, CSV wraps it in double quotes and doubles any embedded quotes (
"Smith, ""Jr."""). This sample avoids that on purpose so it parses identically under strict and sloppy parsers alike — a useful control when debugging. - Plain UTF-8, no BOM. Numbers (
salary) and dates (start_date, ISO 8601) are just text; CSV carries no type information, so consuming tools must infer or declare types.
That typelessness is CSV’s defining trade-off. It is the lingua franca every spreadsheet, database, and dataframe library speaks, but round-tripping through it discards the schema that formats like Parquet embed. The same 30 employee rows exist in eleven formats across this section, so you can convert any of them to CSV and diff against this file as ground truth.

4 questionsDoes downloading this file send any data to a server?
No. The sample is a static file served directly by the site — nothing is uploaded, processed, or inspected when you download it. The CSV tools linked below also run entirely in your browser.
When do CSV fields need to be quoted?
A field must be wrapped in double quotes when it contains a comma, a double quote, or a line break. Embedded double quotes are escaped by doubling them. None of the values in this sample need quoting, which makes it a good baseline file — pair it with your own messier data when testing a parser.
Where can I get larger or topic-specific sample CSV data?
